Training Impulse Control

Some people have better impulse control than others. Why? This is still being researched.

Impulse control is located in the frontal lobe, part of our constellation of executive functions. I assume that this is something that can be developed, and this, too, is being researched. With our growing understanding of the power of neuroplasticity, it certainly seems likely. I wonder if it might be affected by our capacity for empathy as well.

I am feeling curious about if this area has changed over time (become smaller or less active), and if it’s different from one culture to another.

I won’t be able to satisfy this curiosity, but I can muse on it. I fully expect that if we were able to compare brains, we’d find that modern Americans would have low activity in their frontal lobes. I’m sure that we’re higher than average on seeking pleasure and self-gratification. This week our disgusting displays of American exceptionalism certainly makes it seem so.
